HEALTH CARE FOR ALL AWARDED $100,000 THROUGH
CUMMINGS FOUNDATION’S “$100K for 100” PROGRAM
(Boston, MA) - Health Care For All (HCFA) announced today that it is one of 100 local nonprofits to receive grants of $100,000 each through Cummings Foundation’s "$100K for 100” program. HCFA was chosen from a total of 597 applicants through a competitive review process.
HCFA promotes health justice in Massachusetts by working to reduce disparities and ensure coverage and access for all. HCFA’s direct service program, the Consumer Assistance HelpLine, assists individuals and families statewide, as well as informs the groups’ coalition and policy work to develop solutions that address barriers to health care access. The HelpLine provides services in Portuguese, Spanish, and English, and HelpLine counselors take an average of 20,000 calls per year.
HCFA’s Executive Director, Amy Rosenthal, will join 300 other guests at a reception at TradeCenter 128 in Woburn to celebrate the $10 million infusion into Greater Boston’s nonprofit sector. With the conclusion of this grant cycle, Cummings Foundation has now awarded more than $220 million to Greater Boston nonprofits alone.
“We are deeply grateful to Cummings Foundation for their support of our work and the HelpLine. Thanks to this grant, we will be able to serve and assist more consumers who need help navigating the health care system so they can get the care they need for themselves and their families” said Rosenthal.
With Cummings Foundation support, HCFA will be able to increase the number of calls it handles during a time when more and more consumers are confused about whether their health care coverage remains intact, what changes to anticipate in the year to come and how immigrant communities, in particular, are affected. HCFA will also utilize the support of Cummings Foundation to focus more on in-person outreach and education to low-income households, immigrants, and those who depend on MassHealth coverage.
The “$100k for 100” program supports nonprofits that are based in and primarily serve Middlesex, Essex, and Suffolk Counties. Through this place-based initiative, Cummings Foundation aims to give back in the area where it owns commercial buildings, all of which are managed, at no cost to the Foundation, by its affiliate Cummings Properties. Founded in 1970 by Bill Cummings of Winchester, the Woburn-based commercial real estate firm leases and manages 11 million square feet of space, the majority of which exclusively benefits the Foundation.
“We are indebted to the nonprofit organizations like Health Care For All that have a meaningful and positive impact on the local communities where our colleagues and clients live and work” said Joel Swets, Cummings Foundation’s executive director. “We are delighted to invest in their important programs and services.”
Cummings Foundation announced an additional $10 million in early May through its new Sustaining Grants, which extend “$100k for 100” funding for previous winners for 10 more years. Beginning in 2019, the Foundation will increase its total giving through these two programs from $20 million to $25 million.
